Colon Market, VALENCIA
Inaugurated on December 24, 1916, the Mercado de Colón, designed by architect Francisco Mora Berenguer, is a jewel of Valencian modernism, built between 1914 and 1916.
For years it remained closed and in significant physical deterioration, with corroded structures at risk of collapse, until the end of the 20th century when its recovery was promoted.
Restoration (1999–2003)
The project, directed by Luis López Silgo and Enrique Martínez Díaz, was carried out in two phases:
First phase: underpinning and consolidation of the foundations, and excavation of four basements, including three levels of parking and a commercial mezzanine. Advanced techniques such as diaphragm walls and piles were used to preserve the original structure.
Second phase: restoration of the historic hall (repair of the iron structure, rust removal, recovery of original bricks and ornaments) and the creation of new commercial and hospitality spaces with glass cubes, a skylight, and areas open to natural light.
The intervention was awarded the Europa Nostra Award for restoration in 2003. The total cost amounted to around €33 million, including the final ornamental restoration based on old photographs.
Today, the Mercado de Colón is an elegant space where modernism coexists with modernity: restaurants, gourmet shops, and underground parking, all while preserving the architectural prominence of the building.
